What is hazardous waste?

Imagine this. You’re cleaning out your garage and want to clear off those shelves… but you debate whether or not some items can go straight into the landfill. You don’t want to risk harming the environment or anyone handling the waste.

Don’t worry — we understand how confusing it can be!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hazardous waste is defined as waste with properties that make it dangerous or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment.

Hazardous waste can be:

  1. Liquids
  2. Solids
  3. Gases
  4. Sludges

Why can’t I put hazardous waste in my dumpster?

If hazardous waste is not disposed of properly, it can negatively affect the environment. Without proper disposable, the risk for leaks, spills and fires increase…including contaminating drinking water (YIKES!). Here are some safe places to dispose of your household hazardous waste.
